FOREST CITY, JULY 16, 2023 – The joyous atmosphere at the annual Camp Winnebago Rally turned somber on July 16 when a tragic accident claimed the life of 76-year-old Joyce Engstrom from Minnesota. The incident occurred around 6:50 p.m. as she was riding in a two-axle trailer being towed by a truck. The trailer unexpectedly became unhooked and started rolling downhill, resulting in Ms. Engstrom being ejected from the vehicle and suffering fatal injuries.
Authorities investigating the accident report that Ms. Engstrom either leaped out of the trailer’s path or was thrown out, tragically getting run over by the rear wheel. The incident sent shockwaves through the gathering at Camp Winnebago Rally, a beloved annual event in Forest City where RV owners of the Winnebago brand come together to celebrate their shared passion.
The Camp Winnebago Rally, previously known as the Grand National Rally, attracts enthusiastic RV owners from across the nation. Held in Forest City, the event features an array of engaging activities, including entertainment, lectures, and tours of the Winnebago factory.
Following the accident, emergency responders rushed to the scene, and the trailer was eventually brought to a halt at the base of the hill. Engstrom had to be carefully extricated from under the trailer, after which she was airlifted to Mercyone North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City via helicopter. Despite the efforts of the medical team, she tragically succumbed to her injuries and passed away at the medical center.
